What actually works
Four ways to listen to AI answers on a Mac — and where each one falls short.
| Method | Works inside the Claude / ChatGPT apps? | Private? | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT's read-aloud button | Only inside ChatGPT | Cloud | Free with ChatGPT |
| macOS Speak Selection (⌥+Esc) | Often no — selection breaks | On-device | Free |
| Browser extensions | Browser only, not the apps | Varies — cloud or local | Varies |
| Sorrel (clipboard hotkey) | Yes — anywhere you can copy | On-device by default | $9.99 once |

Listen to any answer in 3 steps
Copy the answer
In the Claude or ChatGPT app — or your browser — select the reply and press ⌘C. Because Sorrel reads the clipboard, this works even where selection is awkward.
Press ⌥⌘V
Sorrel strips the markdown, code and links, then reads the answer aloud in your Mac's own voice — no app to switch to.
Listen, privately
Playback happens on your Mac with its built-in voices. No account, nothing uploaded. Tune the voice and speed in Settings whenever you like.
Common questions
Can ChatGPT read its answers aloud?
Yes — ChatGPT has a read-aloud button for its replies. The catch: it only works inside ChatGPT, in the cloud. It won't read a Claude answer, another app, or anything else on your Mac.
Can Claude read its answers aloud?
Claude can read replies aloud in its web and phone apps (Voice Mode), but not in the Mac desktop app. To listen on your Mac's desktop you need a separate tool. Sorrel does it by reading your clipboard — copy the answer, press a hotkey, and it speaks.
Why doesn't the built-in Mac read-aloud work in the ChatGPT or Claude apps?
Those desktop apps handle text in a way where macOS Speak Selection and text selection often don't work. Sorrel reads whatever you copy instead, so it works in those apps.
How do I listen to AI answers privately?
Use a tool that speaks on-device. Sorrel generates audio with your Mac's own voices, so the text never leaves your computer — unlike cloud read-aloud features that send it to a server.
Does it cost anything?
Sorrel is free for 14 days, then $9.99 once — no subscription. The macOS built-in Speak Selection is free but selection-based, so it struggles inside the AI apps.
